Stisted CofE Primary Academy has been identified this year as the most sought after primary school in Essex for the September 2026 Reception intake, highlighting the growing demand for places at our successful small rural school.
The academy, which has just 15 Reception places, received 33 first-choice preferences, making it the most oversubscribed primary school in Essex when measured by the percentage of first-choice applications against available places.
Stisted remains, first and foremost, a school serving the Stisted community. Importantly, every child living within the school’s catchment area who applied was offered a place. The additional demand has come from families outside the village catchment choosing to travel to Stisted, reflecting the school’s strong reputation and the confidence families have in its provision.
The level of interest is seen as a reflection of the school’s strong reputation, although Canonium Learning Trust, which the school is part of, acknowledged that many families will inevitably be disappointed at not securing a place.
Trust leaders confirmed there are no plans to expand the school, emphasising that its size remains appropriate for the local community and catchment it serves. The pattern of oversubscription instead reflects the willingness of parents to travel beyond their local area in order to access a school with a strong reputation and outcomes.
As a half-form entry primary, Stisted CofE Academy educates just 15 pupils per year group. This enables a lower pupil-to-teacher ratio, particularly in the early years, supporting highly personalised teaching and a strong start to education.
Small rural schools play a vital role within the education system. They sustain local communities, provide accessible education, and - when well supported - deliver exceptional outcomes.
Stisted CofE Academy demonstrates how this model can flourish.
The school’s current success represents a significant long-term transformation.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the school experienced a decline in pupil numbers and even faced potential closure like many rural village schools at that time. Today, it is full, thriving, and in high demand.
This journey reflects sustained leadership, strong governance, and a clear commitment to continuous improvement.
As part of Canonium Learning Trust, Stisted benefits from a collaborative model that strengthens both educational and operational practice.
The Trust provides:
strong governance and financial oversight
shared expertise and professional development
robust operational systems that enable leaders to focus on teaching and learning
This approach reflects Canonium’s vision:
“One body, many members, flourishing together.”
Martin Hawrylak, CEO for Canonium Learning Trust said:
“We are pleased to see the strong level of demand for places at Stisted, which reflects the quality of education and care the school provides.
What matters most is that every child within the local community who applied has been offered a place. The additional demand comes from families choosing to travel to the school, which speaks to its reputation and the confidence parents have in its provision.
Stisted is a powerful example of how small rural schools can flourish when supported by strong leadership, clear values, and effective collaboration. Our focus remains on ensuring every child receives the very best education possible.”
